is there a way to turn a linux computer into windows?

Q. I hate linux and dosnt work well for me. Is there a way to turn my linux computer into a windows? Can make windows run on it? Can you turn it into a windows computer?

A. If you have a windoze install disk I imagine you could reformat and reinstall.

How to use a crossover cable between two computers?
Q. I have two Ubuntu Linux computers and a crossover cable.....What do I do? I just want to be able to share files between computers.

A. Set the IP addresses on both computers to be within one sub network like

pc1 ip - > 192.168.0.2
pc1 mask -> 255.255.255.0

pc2 ip - > 192.168.0.3
pc2 mask -> 255.255.255.0

After that you must share at least one resource on one of the pc's

After that you should be able to access the shared resource from the other computer

Is it possible to link multiple linux based computers in a network into one to form one powerful computer?
Q. I heard a while ago that you can actually link multiple linux based computers together to form one powerful one. Any ideas?

A. Clustering / Cloud computing is not an easy task - but it's achievable.
It also depends on what the task you want to achieve. Clustering is usually done to batch huge processing jobs that would otherwise take weeks or months.

Some examples:
Render farms - thousands of linux processing computers rendering 3D images to form a movie (think Shrek or the like)

Compile farms - same, but used to compile huge applications - like video games. usually dist-cc is used.

If you simply want a "super computer", then this isn't the way to go.

When is Google going to release a real version of Chrome OS?

Q. Not Chrome OS Linux, or from Hexxah, but from Google itself. So far you can only get it if you buy a Chromebook. When is Google going to let us buy a cd or download it? Nothing else is working for me, but Joli OS is a close second.

A. I don't think they will because they want people to buy Chromebooks "...the way you will get Google Chrome OS is by buying a Chromebook that has Google Chrome OS installed by the OEM." http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chromium-os-faq but you can also try EasyPeasy http://www.geteasypeasy.com/

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to a computer buyer when using one of the?
Q. free operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than using windows?

A. Windows - people are more accostmed to using windows, it is the business preferred OS.
Linux - Ubuntu - less then user friendly to configure and setup, but stable.
Chrome - new, never used it myself, can't make any suggestions on it....

How do I block websites on my computer?
Q. I use Google Chrome. On a linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

Minecraft launcher wont download on Macbook?
Q. When my mom upgraded my computer to Mountain Lion, minecraft got deleted from my computer. When I had the launcher before I didn't download it from the actual minecraft site, I put it in a file in evernote from my iPod (because my computer has parental controls on it and I can't get to minecrafts site.) My mom realized it wasn't actually downloaded to my computer so I tried downloading it (from minecraft.net) but every time a pop up came up saying it was a damaged file and couldn't be opened so I needed to move it to the trash. When I looked at the file in downloads it said the file was 149 KB when online it said it was supposed to be 270 KB. I turned off pretty much all of the parental controls and firewalls and it still isn't working so I just played through that evernote file like before. When I logged in my world's weren't there. I'm so frustrated and I'm not sure why it isn't working. Any ideas? If you need any more information let me know

A. I'm not sure if the problem is that yuor launcher is not loading orthat your worlds are not there, but forthe launcher, make your you downloaded the mac/linux version, and for thewrlds, its normal that your world worlds are not there if you changed pc. you had tosave your worlds on a USB key and then put themback in /.minecraft. Hope i helped!!:D

what are some AWESOME apps for android?
Q. I download the most convincing;)

A. The list

1. Google Voice

Google Voice is a service that is so useful I consider it one of the top benefits of Android itself, especially since Apple rejected the Google Voice app for the iPhone. It gives you a phone number that can ring to multiple places or devices and it allows you to access all of your voicemail and text messages over the Web. The Android app integrates even deeper. It can make outgoing calls look like theyâre coming from your Google Voice number so that you can keep your real mobile number private.

2. Advanced Task Killer

One of the realities of having a multitasking mobile OS in Android is that you have to manage your apps so that they donât hurt performance or battery life. Advanced Task Killer (or ATK) is my favorite. It even comes with a widget that you can tap once to kill all open apps.

3. Dropbox

Dropbox is a great cloud service that automatically syncs a folder of files between multiple computers (Windows, Mac, or Linux). This app extends Dropbox to Android and interacts with other apps (such as Documents To Go) to open the files.

4. Evernote

Once you get used to typing on a virtual keyboard (and it honestly took me over a year to do it), then these devices are great for note-taking, and Evernote is a great note-taking app. It is similar to Dropbox in that it saves data locally but syncs it across all your machines and devices.

5. DroidAnalytics

For some reason Google doesnât have an official app (for either Android or iPhone) for Google Analytics. The best one Iâve found on Android is DroidAnalytics. Another good one is mAnalytics.

6. Documents To Go

The free version of Documents To Go offers a great little reader for Word and Excel files. You can upgrade to the full version (for $15) if you want to edit files and add PowerPoint files to the mix. If you do want editing capability, Iâd also recommend taking a look at QuickOffice.

7. Amazon Kindle

I never warmed up to the Amazon Kindle e-reader, but Iâm a big fan of the Kindle mobile app. Since it was released Iâve read a lot more books simply because my smartphone is always with me and I can pull it and read a few pages anytime Iâve got a couple minutes free.

8. Places Directory

This is an awesome app for finding shops and services near your current location. From restaurants to movie theaters to medical facilities to taxis, this app is very accurate and takes advantage of the business information from Google Local. This app is better than the info you get from a GPS unit (or app) and better than any of the similar apps available on the iPhone.

9. Tripit

I dig Tripit. It is by far the best app Iâve found for keeping track of all my travel itineraries. It runs on some great backend systems. You simply forward your confirmation emails for your flights, hotels, rental cars, and more to Tripit and it automatically organizes them into trips with all your details and confirmation numbers.

10. Seesmic

Twitter is an amazing instant-intelligence engine and it was made for mobile browsing. Although thereâs an official Twitter app for Android now, Seesmic is still the best Android Twitter client.

11. FCC Speedtest

Iâm obsessed with running speed tests to check my bandwidth in various places, both to see 3G fluctuations and to check the quality of Wi-Fi. There are a number of really good speedtest apps, but my new favorite is the FCC Test app.

12. Astro File Manager

Another one of the great things about Android (if youâre a geek or a tinkerer) is that you have lower-level access to the system itself. Astro is an app that lets you navigate the Android file system.

13. Got To Do

There are plenty of to-do apps to choose from on Android but I prefer Got To Do because of the solid interface and the fact that it can sync with the online service Toodledo.

14. Gist

Many of us have contact lists scattered across various computers, devices, and online services. Gist is a Web service that can bring them together and even pull in stuff from the Web to help you stay up to date with your most important contacts. Thereâs an Android app as well as an iPhone app.

15. TED Mobile

TED is a fascinating event that features a meeting of the minds of some of societyâs most influential thinkers. Youâll definitely disagree with some of them, because thereâs a large diversity of opinions, but many talks are worth listening to. What I love is that theyâve taken the videos from their conference and made them freely available on the Web. This app provides a great way to access the videos. I hope more conferences follow TEDâs lead on this.

How do I download openSUSE onto a live USB?

Q. How much space does it require to boot? Is there anything that I have to download onto the USB stick to make it ready? And in general, how DO you download something to a live USB? Please give me a step by step guide.

A. This might help you a lot:

http://billmullins.wordpress.com/2011/11/12/free-linux-live-usb-creator-run-or-boot-linux-from-a-flash-drive/

Don't forget to read the user guide:

How do install mpeg decoders and flash for linux fedora 10?
Q. I am completely new to linux fedora and linux for that matter. I am running fedora from a live usb until i get these issues fixed. I apparently need to install mpeg decoders, xvid decoders, avi decoders and a flash player. Being a complete noob to linux I don't know how to go about this.

A. It looks like the decoders are not patent free and fedora will not include them. Other linux distros do allow a user to install them if they wish at their own risk.
The second link has instructions for flash.
You should search the fedora foum for more info on the codecs.
Good luck

whats the point of booting linux as a live disto if you cant save?
Q. ive been reading about multiboot and i was wondering, whats the point of loading linux as a live usb if you cant save your stuff?

A. Using the built in linux features. I use it for many different things from hard drive recovery, file access behind a password locked windows, and quite a few networking things.

Does every game on linux work on every distro?

Q. I wanted to try out Linux. I wanted to either get Fedora or Ubuntu (Mostly Fedora). So I'm a PC gamer, and I wanted to try out the Steam on Linux so my question is:
Most of the games on Steam say that they require one of the three distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint.
Some other games say they only require one (usually Ubuntu) which sort of makes me think that means thats the only one that it will work on. So if it list just one of the distro does that really mean it can't at all run on any other Distro?
By the way the Linux game I'm looking at is Serious Sam 3, which is one of those games that say they only require ubuntu.

A. It depends on how it's packaged.

A game developer that just releases a .deb with Ubuntu in mind just hung Fedora and SUSE users out to dry because they use .rpm packages. Of course if the source code is available one could always compile the game manually, but that doesn't mean that every "Linux program" works on every distribution by default, as they obviously don't.

Steam for Linux is still in Beta, so things are still up in air, as you've noticed with the varying system requirements; it often seems that Valve is really targetting the Ubuntu and Ubuntu-derivative segment because it thinks that's where the biggest user-base is, but I'm sure Fedora and the other rpm distros won't be completely ignored.

How do I run Steam games on Linux?
Q. I got Steam to work on Linux using Wine. All my games worked just fine for a while, but all of the sudden none of them will run (except Portal for some reason). When i try to open them it says, "Preparing to launch," then does nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?

A. You could use a program like WINE (Windows Emulator) to get it going. Or you can try a virtual machine but sometimes that wont load drivers and you still wont be able to play. The best option will be a dual boot of windows and linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

How can i play COD MW2 on Linux Ubuntu?
Q. So i bought MW2 and installed steam on linux and then installed the game... after it finished, i launch the game and it opens but with a dark screen and the words seem to be corrupted , like they do not appear and i cant do anything with it... how can i play MW2 on my computer, although i have Wine and the game opens through it already,,, what should i do?

Thanks in Advance,
Adam.
i did install wine from before... and i dont know how to open the game in window mode , can you please tell me how?

A. Try using PlayOnLinux. It will configure Wine automatically for COD MW2.

Linux users if I use a CD that came with a book to install linux and it is missing programs?

Q. Like let's say movie player, or music player, or simple things like calculator, or some sort of notepad. Where can I download them that will work with linux?

A. Linux will generally have a program like Software Center or Synaptic to install the files from their repositories. You open this and type in a search for what you may not have, check the file and click apply and it will install the software for you. There isn't any reason to be doing terminal commands unless it is a file that is not in the repository and to install from the terminal, you must be logged in as root, not user. Most versions of Linux disable the root account to prevent people from messing the operating system up. Some of what you have mentioned are part of the install for the desktop environment being used and don't need to be installed by the user. You can always download a Linux LiveCD and run it in memory to see if it is what you want to install.

How to remove an OS from a multiboot?
Q. For a while now I've been running Windows 7 in a multiboot with Vista and Linux Mint. I'd like to get rid of Vista while keeping a Mint/Win7 dual boot. Is there a way to do this?

A. Depends on which OS is controlling the boot menu. If it is Windows, you will find a text file in the root of your computer called boot.ini. Open it in notepad and you will see the menu options. Remove the line for Vista and resave the file. (Back up the old first just in case...)

I do not know if Win 7 as the option, but with early versions of Windows you can edit the boot.ini using msconfig. Start > Run > type in: msconfig

Go to the boot.ini tab

Run the "check all paths" and it will update the boot.ini to reflect the current configuration of your computer.

How to save file to desktop using Linux commands.?

Q. I am a beginner to Linux commands. I use SSH to connect to a Linux server. What command can I use to save a text file on the server to my desktop? Example?

A. From your desktop, fire up a terminal, or use Cygwin if you're under Windows (make sure you have installed the openssh packages) :

scp <your_user_name>@<server_name>:<path to remote file> <path to local dir/file>

Enter your password, and you're done :)

How hard is it to run a secure Linux server, with Apache, PHP, MySQL, and mail services?
Q. I will be getting my own dedicated server soon and while I have a functional knowledge of the concepts of Linux, I don't know everything. Will my server be reasonably secure if I am sure to keep everything updated and patched (assume there are no PHP scripts vulnerable to SQL injection etc.)

A. Make sure you have strong passwords for everything. This includes your database. Use SSH to connect, scp or some other secure program to transfer files (not vanilla FTP, since it transmits passwords in the clear).
If your database doesn't need to talk to other hosts, configure it so it only listens on the loopback interface.
Be careful when configuring your mail server, so it isn't an open relay.
Get a cert for the web server, so you can use SSL to protect information that gets sent over the net.

The biggest potential source of vulnerabilities will be from whatever web apps you install. Subscribe to the announcement/security mailing list(s) for those apps (and for the Linux distro you use), so you don't get blindsided. Before you install something, you might want to check out a security site (like Secunia) and search to see what advisories have been issued for that software w/in the recent past. This will give you an idea about just how worried you should be about potential issues down the road (and what current issues there are that haven't been fixed, yet).

If you're rolling your own web apps, there are a whole bunch of things to watch out for, especially if you're doing things with user data (file uploads, SQL searches, form processing, etc).

How do I upload a folder recursively via SSH through a linux terminal?
Q. The problem is quite simple actually. I have a folder in my desktop which I want to be able to upload to my server via SSH. I want to be able to do that using only the linux terminal. Thanks
I don't know about import/export functions. I just want to upload via SSH. I know it's possible, I just don't know how.

A. See the SCP command (syntax in source link). It copies files over ssh. As you can see, it has an option to put an entire folder over at once.

Alternatively, there's SFTP (secure-ftp) which tunnels a ftp connection through ssh (valid only if the target server also has ftp service in addition to ssh).
