How do I get rid of Windows XP and install Linux Ubuntu?

Q. Ok, so I currently have Windows XP which is filled with crap. Idealistically I would like to wipe the Windows XP clean, start with a new slate, and then install Linux Ubuntu. If anyone could help other than just giving me the Linux Ubuntu website, I would really appreciate it.

A. Weee! Yay! a question that gets me excited! I have been using Ubuntu for about 3yrs now and love it. Though I still have XP installed for games. You have many options infront of you to do this.

The current release of Ubuntu (8.10) allows you to do the following:

-Run Ubuntu INSIDE windows as a virtual OS so you can check it out and see whats what.

- Boot from the CD and use it as a "Live" CD

- Dual Boot (what I use), so that when the machine starts you can select what OS you wish to boot.

- Clean install, say goodbye to windows forever and just go with Linux.

All you need to do to get one of these is download the .iso image from the Ubuntu website (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download), burn it to a CD and yer good to go.

For the 1st option just put the CD in the drive while windows is up and running and it will ask you if you would like to do the install.

For the other options, boot the machine with the CD and select install from the menu and follow the options for the type of install you would like.

You will find there is a ton of help out there from both the Ubuntu and the general Linux community. The Ubuntu forums are a great place to find many answers to the questions you will have. Good luck and I hope you make the switch.

How do i revert to xp from Linux?
Q. Hi,

I have the operating system Ubuntu (linux) now i want to switch to xp but i do not have the xp cd.Is there an alternative way on doing this or am i stuck?

A. If you do not have the XP disc. then you are stuck. Why not try a different Linux distro.

I recommend Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna (Main Edition) as it is easy to install and use, and comes with much of the software you are likely to use preinstalled. You can download the Linux Mint 4.0 ISO image from http://linuxmint.com/download.html All you need to do then is create a bootable CD. Here is a detailed list of software include and tutorial on the installation of Linux Mint 4.0 http://www.howtoforge.com/desktop-installation-guide-linux-mint-4.0-daryna

"Missing Operating System" error when booting a live distribution of Linux Mint on a USB?

Q. I formated my flash drive to FAT32 and used UNetbootin to mount the latest Linux Mint .iso file on to my USB. Then I restarted my computer and configured the BIOs to boot from a flash drive. However, I get a large "Missing Operating System" error. Help?

A. There must be an error with the image. Despite what people say Linux is not as easy to boot from USB and mint is not as easy as ubantu to do that. If you have the iso on your desktop you can test it in a virtual drive if you have Hyper V on your system. or put it one a DVD. or try a different usb boot software like the universal boot. That works ive used it.

The important thing is don't get stuck try things to find the problem. Does it support legacy usb boot your machine?

For develop the UBUNTU Linux which programming is used? And how to modify UBUNTU?
Q. I don't no which programming language is used to develop the UBUNTU Linux. Can I write the code for UBUNTU. My plan to make operating system specially for Bio research people. How to write the code & from which language i have to write the code? Also from where I have to get the original code of UBUNTU Linux?

A. Well first off, ubuntu is a derivative of Debian. They use C and C++.

To modify Linux, you don't normally start coding, usually you use
https://www.reconstructor.org/wiki/reconstructor/

You put the ISO image in there and begin to modify it...That's how most other derivatives such as Linux Mint are made.

Also, if you want a Linux distro for science research, you should look into scientific linux based on Red Hat linux http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=scientific
Also, ubuntu sucks, you will have a lot of work to do if you start with it as a base.

how do i go about putting this iso file on my USB flash drive?
Q. i recently downloaded the 32-bit version of linux mint with XFCE interface or whatever.the problem is,i can't figure out how to burn the entire file onto my usb flash drive.whenever i try using some program,it opens the file and shows all the folders inside, like install and boot, etc.but it doesn't let me choose the whole thing and put it on the flash drive.can anyone help me with this?any help is appreciated!

A. Download Winrar (search it on Google) then when the setup is complete make sure the ISO check box is ticked in what files to use with Winrar. Then you can open the ISO file and extract the contents to whatever destination you choose.

i need help for installing puppy Linux in my computer?
Q. I have downloaded puppy Linux iso file and then I have made my USB bootable with it. I stuck it in usb port I booted it and It says searching for puppy files in computer drive and then error comes.

A. Something must have happened when you created your USB bootable. Create it again following instructions from these links

http://www.puppylinux.com/flash-puppy.htm
http://www.linuxgoodies.com/puppyonusb.html

Make sure you do a frugal install and not a full install. The frugal install is a better option.

What are the requirements to distribute a linux live iso?

Q. I want to create a custom linux iso with a few of my personally developed applications and distribute it online. I know Linux is open source, but does this mean I can legally sell the ISO? Are some distros better suited for this than others?

A. Some distros are better suited. Some already have live-cd systems prebuilt, you simply add applications. Ubuntu, Slax, and Gentoo are common live distros.

You can sell the ISO, as long as you don't violate any licenses. Most licenses are GPLs, Creative Commons, or BSDs. You have to comply with the terms of each license, including distribution and availability of source code.

Techies blocked me from connecting to the internet?
Q. Okay, I use a macbook at school to connect to wireless. Yesterday I was downloading a lot of stuff (not illegal, just a linux iso) and they shut the network down for a while. Now, everyone can access but I can't. Is there anyway to get around whatever they did?

A. They booted you because you violated access policies. You'll have to go to the network administrator and ask to be reinstated. They will probably make you sign a use waiver but should give you second shot at access.

Q. I downloaded yellow dog linux iso and it is a compressed .rar file. Inside this there is a folder called Yellowdog it contains 3.6 gb of the overall 3.66gb. to burn this do i just drag this folder onto my disk drive when i have a dvd inside?

A. Ok to open the file you need something like ultra iso or magic iso, or just google search something which can burn iso and open them.
Once you get your program, open it, add your file and burn on to cd/dvd.

A. Yep - follow any of the online guides. But first things first, you need to burn the ISO image(s) to CD/DVD using a program like ImgBurn, then reboot with the disk in your drive.
