How to create a custom linux live CD?

Q. Hi,

I want to create a small linux live CD with a few small programs on it (and nothing more, could even be command line only)

Anyone knows how I can do that?

Q. Hey so I'm running Puppy linux through my live cd but I don't know how to actually put it on my hard drive. I don't want to use any partitions I have one partition with windows 2000 and I want to replace it with puppylinux.

I want to remove windows and install linux

A. Do you have the Hard drive partitioned already and one partition is empty? If it is not already partitioned. the when you partition it, you will then lose all the data and the operating system on the hard drive. If like you say you only have 1 partition then that is possible but installing puppy linux, using the command line interface is no easy task. Not even for an advanced user. Hope this helps

Is it possible to have Mint Linux and Ubuntu Linux on same laptop?
Q. I currently have Ubuntu 10 LTS on my laptop. Can I also add Mint Linux and do the dual boot thing? If so how? I want to do this without having to reinstall my Ubuntu 10 LTS that's already sitting on my hard drive. Thanks!

A. Yes, it technically is. However, it would be difficult. I believe the easiest way would be to create a "Linux Live Key" (Google the software.) You basically plug in a flashdrive, load the ISO of the Linux you want onto it, then, when your comp is JUST starting up (within the first 3 seconds) access your boot menu, then select the USB and it will boot up a different version of Linux, despite the version that is installed on your computer.

Am I risking lossing my operating system by booting my laptop with a linux live cd?

Q. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it wont really start up, so im going to recover my data from it by using a linux live cd to boot it up. Is there any risk that ill lose my windows 7 in the process?

A. a linux live cd wont remove your windows 7 operating system.the guy who said it would doesn't know what hes talking about.when you restart your computer and eject the cd nothing was changed as far as windows 7 still being your os.the only way a linux live cd removes windows is if you are trying to actually install linux .then of course it would remove windows and install linux.but just running a linux live cd wont damage anything.that first poster is a noob.

A. No.

Windows 7 uses NTFS file system, so a decent linux live CD should be able to read them, but not write to them. i.e, You can read the files, but you can't alter them in any way, ergo you can't really stuff them up unless you reformat.

If I boot my computer from a linux live cd, how can I access the computer hdd to recover data?
Q. My computer quit, but before I reset the system, I need to get pictures, documents, and other data from it. I can boot up with a Linux Live CD, but am having trouble accessing the HDD. Any Ideas?

A. I am assuming when you say "access the HDD" you mean the files created under Windows?

If so, you can still get to them: remove the CD and it will boot up in Windows; then put the files you need on a flash drive, CD or external HDD.

Then reinsert the linux CD, boot up linux, and retrieve the files from the flash drive, etc.

How to create a custom linux live CD?

Q. Hi,

I want to create a small linux live CD with a few small programs on it (and nothing more, could even be command line only)

Anyone knows how I can do that?

Are there any decent tutorials on making a Windows 8 live usb?

Q. I have a windows 8 consumer preview iso that I'd like to be able too boot from just like a linux live usb.

How to save Linux Live CD files on your hard drive?
Q. Is it possible to save Linux Live CD files on your hard drive of the computer you are using it on so it doesnt get erased everytime you take the disc out? If so please explain, thanks. :)

A. Hi
Just use puppy linux frugal install.
Just start the puppy cd burnt to a cd from the iso downloaded from the puppy site.
Then do a frugal install from the universal installer found in menu>>setup.
This will place 6 files of total 140MB on to your windows drive.
When you close down you can make a save file.
Just pop in the puppy cd into the drive and the files will be booted from your hard drive. No cd in drive = windows.
There is no need to install grub or format your drive until you have more experience.

Which is the smallest Linux distro which can read ntfs partitions?
Q. I need to recover some files from my windows installation using a linux live cd. I have some imp documents in c: which i need to copy into a pen drive. Which will be the most suitable linux for this purpose?

A. You could use Puppy linux.

I want it to run just like a desktop and reconize all my hardware and play my media and files.
Also can you give instructions on what to burn it as and how to boot it?

Can you use PHP and Mysql with a Linux Live CD?

Q. If you come back to Windows will all your PHP & Mysql settings gone? Do you have to reinstall everything again if you decide to use a second time the Linux Live CD?? I don't want to install Linux permanently o0n my sustem but I would like to work with the Lice CD without losing my work & setings. Is it possible?

A. Linux LiveCD's are run within the RAM of your PC so you cannot save you settings between LIVE sessions.

One possibility is having Ubuntu installed on a USB Pendrive

Am I risking lossing my operating system by booting my laptop with a linux live cd?

Q. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it wont really start up, so im going to recover my data from it by using a linux live cd to boot it up. Is there any risk that ill lose my windows 7 in the process?

A. No. Booting Linux from a CD won't harm your windows (unless you deliberately format your hard drive and install Linux from the CD). It's a good way to recover your data, but you'll still have to fix or re-install Windows.

If my computer wont boot a linux live cd, does that mean it wont but a xp cd either?
Q. the laptop is set to boot from cd first. the linux live cd used to work but it has stopped working, does this mean this particular function wont work for other live cd's?

A. There are a lot of things that can cause a failure to boot so it depends on how far along in the process you are getting and what is causing the failure to boot. I've used knoppix as a boot cd for testing and diagnostics on hundreds of machines and it has booted on nearly every machine I've tried it on. The only failures to boot were due to not having enough ram in the computer to load the OS into memory.

However if your computer BIOS does not recognize the concept of bootable cd's then that computer won't boot from any cd. If that is the case then you might be able to add that capability with a bios upgrade.

It's also possible that the bios configuration excludes the CD from the systems search for bootable media. You may need to modify the bios to move the CD up in the boot order or use the "boot menu" (usually accessed by hitting f12 during post)

edited -- another possibility is that you have a CD drive which is not able to read a DVD. The DVD may be bootable but it can't be read by a cd drive.

Now you rule out most of these possibilities since you state that it used to work. That suggests to me that the disk has been damaged, (scratched?). The only other likely cause would be that the CD drive itself is dirty or damaged which might prevent it from reading the disk.

Have you tried other boot disks?

Is it safe to watch porn using a Puppy Linux live cd?

Q. For example: boot from the live cd, surf some porn, then shut down the computer and not save the session.

The Puppy Linux live cd already has flash and everything else setup.
I'm talking about normal porn, nothing illegal.

And by safe, I was referring to my computer possibly being infected by viruses and malware.

What linux live cd should i get?
Q. I want to get a linux live cd which would you prefer.
I want it to run just like a desktop and reconize all my hardware and play my media and files.
Also can you give instructions on what to burn it as and how to boot it?

Am I risking lossing my operating system by booting my laptop with a linux live cd?

Q. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it wont really start up, so im going to recover my data from it by using a linux live cd to boot it up. Is there any risk that ill lose my windows 7 in the process?

A. No.

Windows 7 uses NTFS file system, so a decent linux live CD should be able to read them, but not write to them. i.e, You can read the files, but you can't alter them in any way, ergo you can't really stuff them up unless you reformat.

If I boot my computer from a linux live cd, how can I access the computer hdd to recover data?
Q. My computer quit, but before I reset the system, I need to get pictures, documents, and other data from it. I can boot up with a Linux Live CD, but am having trouble accessing the HDD. Any Ideas?

A. I am assuming when you say "access the HDD" you mean the files created under Windows?

If so, you can still get to them: remove the CD and it will boot up in Windows; then put the files you need on a flash drive, CD or external HDD.

Then reinsert the linux CD, boot up linux, and retrieve the files from the flash drive, etc.

Can you use PHP and Mysql with a Linux Live CD?

Q. If you come back to Windows will all your PHP & Mysql settings gone? Do you have to reinstall everything again if you decide to use a second time the Linux Live CD?? I don't want to install Linux permanently o0n my sustem but I would like to work with the Lice CD without losing my work & setings. Is it possible?

A. Linux LiveCD's are run within the RAM of your PC so you cannot save you settings between LIVE sessions.

One possibility is having Ubuntu installed on a USB Pendrive

Q. For example: boot from the live cd, surf some porn, then shut down the computer and not save the session.

The Puppy Linux live cd already has flash and everything else setup.
I'm talking about normal porn, nothing illegal.

And by safe, I was referring to my computer possibly being infected by viruses and malware.

A. I would image so. First off Linux would not be susceptible to most of the infections that those websites will give you, secondly the session would not be saved, meaning that if you do get something it will be erased when you shut down the system.

You could also use a Windows "live cd" such as Bart's PE.

Can I install the grub bootloader onto my laptop from ubuntu live cd without an installation of linux?
Q. Can I install the GRUB Bootloader from an Ubuntu Linux Live CD without already having Linux installed or having to install Linux?

If not, is there a way to install just the Windows Bootloader from a disk or another bootloader from a disk to my laptop?

(Its because i deleted my ubuntu install which had GRUB and now when i turn it on it just comes up with "Error 17" in grub)

A. If you don't have a linux os on your computer it may not help to install grub.
You can install the windows bootloader.
You did not say if you are using xp or vista.
