What is the easiest Linux or Uix certification to pursue?

Q. I work in IT field. Will Linux+ from Comptia from be the easiest and take least time to prepare and study?

A. Yes it is the easiest, and be a foundation for Linux knowledge - however like the other Comptia certifications they are only a foundation and must be built upon to get solid knowledge in the area. Walking into an interview and saying you are Linux+/Network+/A+ will only impress the HR Department but won't get you much with the IT department unless you're interviewing for the most entry level position they offer.

A. Not really as there is still a lot of stuff that doesn't work with Linux although I commend the Linux Foundation for doing this.
Unfortunately Windows still rules but Apple is making a big impact in education circles.

How do I get Ubuntu Linux to detect a windstream modem?

Q. I am hooking up my brothers new computer which has Ubuntu Linux and I need to know how to get it to detect his windstream modem.

A. I suspect that your modem doesn't have any driver for linux. THe Windstream website apparently only has windows drivers, and a search on the linux compatibility list turns up nothing. See the links below.

A. Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using OSS. However Linux does have its limitations particularly in gaming. My advice is to set up a Dual Boot of Windows and Linux.

There are better distros. than Ubuntu available. I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition Its easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Can I directly install Itunes on Linux Mint 8?

A. If you are looking to delete and format the Drive with Linux Mint 4.0 on it I recommend you use Gnome Partition Editor (GParted). For this operation you can run off any Ubuntu or Mint LiveCD as Gnome Partition Editor is included

I downloaded code blocks on mint. I ran the executible and it got the files. i can run the application but cannot find the files. Any clue where they are?

A. Are you referring to the Synaptic Package Manager? Everything is downloaded into /var/cache/apt or /var/cache/apt/archives

If it is from Firefox or Chrome/Chromium, by default it will be in you download folder ~/Downolads (Note: the Tilde means /home/user or is your [the active users] home folder)

What are the requirements to distribute a linux live iso?

Q. I want to create a custom linux iso with a few of my personally developed applications and distribute it online. I know Linux is open source, but does this mean I can legally sell the ISO? Are some distros better suited for this than others?

A. Some distros are better suited. Some already have live-cd systems prebuilt, you simply add applications. Ubuntu, Slax, and Gentoo are common live distros.

You can sell the ISO, as long as you don't violate any licenses. Most licenses are GPLs, Creative Commons, or BSDs. You have to comply with the terms of each license, including distribution and availability of source code.

What is the best type of linux for a beginning programmer?
Q. I just started software developing at ASU and my teacher recommends using linux over windows but I've seen all different formats and i don't know which one is the best to start off with i would be dual booting with vista 64 bit

A. For developing I would go with one of the technical distributions such as slackware or gentoo. The only thing is they are not only very UNIX-like, they are tough to wrap your brain around generally. Mark Shuttleworth, who started Ubuntu, got his start on Slackware.

Generally I would go with one with a KDE desktop. XFCE4 is nice -- that's my preferred desktop -- however KDE has a LOT tools which make programming easier. And slackware of course offers KDE and XFCE4 as its default desktops. It does not offer GNOME.

The downside of Ubuntu and its derivatives is that one of the innovations of Ubuntu is precisely that it does not offer easy access to the GNU tools, including GCC and make and gdb -- the debugger. You have to go to synaptic or open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get build-essential".

The technical linuxes, Debian, Slackware, Fedora, Gentoo -- or Linux from Scratch -- demand that you get comfortable with the command line. Nevertheless, even for a beginning programmer, I would precisely say that those are the best type of Linux -- or let's face it, GNU/Linux -- for a beginning programmer.

Also, Debian and Fedora have live CDs available, while you can get A taste of Slackware (though they don't say so) using dyne:bolic ( http://www.dynebolic.org ) or slax ( http://www.slax.org ) both of which are live cds. Therefore you can try them without installing them on your hard drive yet at all -- highly recommended.

What distro of linux is best for my computer?
Q. I just bought a pc of of ebay. Its an HP DC5700 running at 1.86ghz with an intel core 2 duo proccessor. and 1 gb of ram. I really want an easy to use distro of linux thats light, and easy to use. And that will use both cores in the computer. Could someone please give me some suggestions, ima kinda new to this linux stuff.

A. I recommend you to "Puppy Linux". It is an amazing distribution for older machines.

There are over three hundred Linux distributions that you can choose from. The choices can be overwhelming. There is no agreement as to what is the best linux distro. We know that Linux Ubuntu is the most popular on the desktop and Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the most popular in enterprise settings. But popularity does not equal best fit.

So what is the best linux distro? It depends on your needs and what you are looking for.

1. For newbies:

If you are new to Linux, I suggest you use Linux Mint or PCLinux. These are the most user friendly distributions.

2. Everyday Linux:

If you are looking for a distro that is going to be around a while and is relatively easy to use, then I suggest Fedora or Ubuntu. Fedora is based by Red Hat and Ubuntu is backed by Canonical.

3. Light and fast:

If you have an older system Puppy Linux is the choice for you. It is an amazing distribution for older machines.

4. Server:

CentOS is simply an unbranded and free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Debian is also an excellent choice, being well known for its stability.

5. Music Production:

Ubuntu Studio is the most popular music and recording solution out there.

6. Multimedia :

If you are interested in turning your computer into a multimedia station, Mythbuntu is the distro for you. The learning curve is a little high, but worth it.

7. Power User:

If you really want to learn Linux, then Gentoo or Slackware is the way to go. Slackware just happens to be the oldest Linux distribution still in active development.

8. Netbooks:

If you are think of using Linux on a netbook, EasyPeasy or Jolicloud are both good choices.

9. KDE Desktop:

For those who like the KDE desktop enviroment OpenSUSE or Kubuntu are probably the best.

10. Kids:

If you have kids the best option for them is Edubuntu.

How do I set up a central media library for my home?

Q. How do I set up a central media library from which I can access iTunes, DVR hard drive and the Internet from any TV in my house?

Need/Want:
1-Access iTunes from anywhere, wirelessly (all our music in on a separate driveânot NAS though)
2-Access the Internet from any of my TVâs with a mainstream browser
3-Need to have DVR capabilities, ideally centralized and accessible from all TVs
4-Wirelessly project sound to multiple speakers

What is the difference between Windows and Linux Servers?

A. Wow! This is a question that pops up all over the web, and one that I had myself as a web services person. You can read a lot about the differences - as well as the advantages of one over the other. In the sources area, I've listed several such discussions and articles, including the last item which is a lengthy discussion in a Wikipedia article on the subject. In terms of finding something non-technical, I would recommend the first site.

The article from AskWebHosting.com states the following about using .net: "If you intend to create your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any of the other Microsoft proprietary technologies then you probably need to use a Windows host. There is limited support for a number of these technologies in Linux, but they can be expensive and are usually lacking in features."

But you're talking about using DotNetNuke, which is an open source answer to .NET. As such, it may not matter at all, from that standpoint, which option you choose.

Problem with ubuntu Linux usb pen drive installation?

Q. Here is my problem:
I installed ubuntu linux on my laptop using someone's pen drive. But before giving back the pen drive to the person, I copied all the files in the pen drive to one of my hard disks, thinking that if ever I need to reinstall linux I will copy these files to my pen drive and that will install linux once again on my system. But that hasn't happened. My pen drive doesn't boot. What's wrong?

A. You need more than just the files. You need to install a bootloader on the disc. Simply dragging the files to and fro is not enough to make it bootable.

USB Pen Drive not working after the format process got interrupted in between?

Please suggest a solution to revive back the contents of the USB and make it working normally again!

How easy is it to shift work between Linux and Windows computers?

Q. I am thinking of buying a cheap netbook ( the ASUS Eee PC 4G 701). Will I be able to write a document on the linux netbook and transfer it to Microsoft Word on my home computer, and is this difficult?

A. If you are going to buy a Linux netbook I recommend buying one of the ones with Ubuntu Linux, such as dells or hp's. The Linux shipped on the eeepc is quite unpopular, and does not represent what Linux is capable of. (although you can reinstall another distribution on it)

A. If you go to your main menu and look for an entry that says Add and Remove programs, you should use that to install games, or any other software that you want. It will automatically download what is needed, install it, and put an entry in you menu.

Basically i have just bought a new acer aspire one linux netbook, i want to install ubuntu so i can install wine. I do not have a disc drive on my netbook so i would need to use a memory stick to transfer the files. Changing to Ubuntu is ok, but I simply don't see the advantage.

Linux is not difficult, just different than what you may be used to using.
You should be able to directly download and install most items from the notebook itself off any web connection.

Can I download Linux on My PS3 with an external hard drive?

Q. I want to download linux but i hear you need a flash drive and have to partition your internal drive. All i have is a 500gig external drive and 40gig internal. Can I make it work? I really dont want to spend more money on a flash drive if this can be done.

A. You can only run Linux on the internal hard drive. The PS3 can't boot Linux from an external device.

I'm sure you can save the Linux files onto the external hard drive and install them from there to the internal hard drive. You'll need to create a partition on the internal hard drive. I think its 10-12 GB.

Q. I have a built-in internet explorer blocker on, and i want to download Linux. (Don't ask) Bable fish doesn't solve the problem. Is there a way someone can post a link or something so that I don't have to go to the website? Thanks! (Any kind of linux will work. I am just a normal person, with normal needs. A. There is no "official" linux.

There are many different distributions or 'flavors' of linux. some are easier to learn than others. some are on CD some on 2 or more.

When I was interested in Linux I went to www.linuxiso.org

That site has downloads for 15 or 20 distributions of linux and links you to the official download site for that particular distro. I would recommend going there first.

Before you download and install any distribution make sure that all your hardware and software is compatible and download ALL the necessary drivers before you make the big switch to linux or you will be in a world of hurt trying to find these drivers after the face, especially if the driver you are looking for is for your video, keyboard, or internet.

Linux can be good to learn and has advantages over windows XP and possibly over Vista as well such as security, lack of viruses, and stability.

For being a GNU/Linux user you are pretty ignorant of how data networks acutally work. The fact is, the only way to protect yourself is totally hiding your IP address, but by totally hiding your IP address, data frames from torrent seeders have no idea where to go to end up on your hard drive.

In short, tough luck, anything/anyone at all that claims to protect your privacy in that regard is lying to you.

Best place to start with Linux is to get Ubuntu and run the live Cd and see if you like it, you can also test your drivers running the live cd.

If you use Ubuntu you will probably need Ubuntu restricted extras from synaptic and a bunch of other stuff

A. "Free and open source" means that you are free to modify, change, and yes, sell, programs based on that source code. Red Hat can sell Linux all it wants, provided it offers the source code to the customers. Red Hat makes most of it's money through paid support lines, not selling the product.

You can't download Red Hat for free, since it contains proprietary components that Red Hat wants you to pay for (and you really wouldln't have any use for them anyway.) You can, however, download a distro made up of all the free parts of Red Hat, and configured in much the same way. This distro is called "Fedora."

A. First you have to track it down, that might be a bit tricky since it is several years out of date.

If you really want to get your hands on the obsolete, unmaintained version then try ftp://archive.download.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/ - but they haven't fixed security holes in it for years, so I strongly advise you not to.

A. Save your code as a .m file (for example your_code.m)

Copy the .m file into the Linux directory you are launching Matlab from
OR
lanch Matlab and cd into the directory where you put the .m file

Run your code by typing the name of the .m file into Matlab command window. So if your code is called 'your_code.m', ou'd type 'your_code' into Matlab and it will run.

The .m file can be a function with a return value, or it can be a script with just a list of commands.

How to Change The Puppy Linux Screen Size?

A. Try:

Or Xvesa Video Wizard if you are using Xvesa - but don't worry if you don't know whether you are using Xorg or Xvesa, just try either and it will tell you if that is the wrong one.
.... but you are probably using Xorg unless it's a very old computer, so you will most likely see the 'Resolution changer' option in the Xorg Video Wizard and that should do what you want.
(or you can run the full wizard to set up all the Xorg or Xvesa settings)

What are the best programs out there to do what Adobe Suite does in Linux?

Q. I'd like to start working in Linux (Kubuntu) and I'm looking for programs that manage to get all the work I currently do on Adobe Suite in Linux. Can anyone advise me on what programs should I use? Something similar to Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Flash. I can live without Dreamweaver. Thnx!

A. I use Ubuntu. There is a Linux answer for everything except Flash. JavaFX is under rapid development and will offer Flash / SMS Silverlight effects with pure code (no authoring environment yet, but a demo was shown at JavaOne).

You can run the older Flash authoring tool in Linux using a windows emulator called WINe. WINe does not run Adobe Suite.

Gimp = Photoshop. InDesign is krap to begin with. You can do page layouts with Scribus, but let me tell you, Scribus is much like the original Aldus Pagemaker. Inkscape is a capable vector arts program much like Illustrator. I recommend FontyPython for font management.

Since I switched to Linux, I never missed the products you mention but I will add it took some getting used to. But hey, remember back all the time you spent to learn how to make Adobe products perform and apply that time to Linux solutions. Keep a Win box available with a good anti-virus software on it. You'll need to make sure whatever products you produce In Linux from web artwork or downloads doesn't hurt other Window computers. But really, Linux is the faster solution for graphics and programming.

Q. Im a graphic designer at a t-shirt company and sometimes we do designs for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Occasionally, people request Hebrew Letters in their design. Does anybody know where I can get the Hebrew letters in a Vector format or very very high resolution file?

A. There are Hebrew TrueType/OpenType fonts from Windows, and Mac, and some FreeType fonts for Linux.
Adobe's software have ME ("Middle East") versions that supports writing from right to left, but even the normal versions let use Hebrew fonts (you just have to type from left to right, which shouldn't be a problem if you don't know Hebrew anyway)

What's the best free vector program to vector my little ponies?

A. One vector program that I know of that is free is Inkscape. It is completely free, open source, and available on Win, Mac, and Linux. I've seen posts by brony artists saying they made their picture in inkscape.

Is there any way I can speed up Tekkit on my computer?

Q. I'm running the Technic pack for minecraft on linux, but with a 32x32 texture pack and all the setting set to the lowest (Render distance, Particles, etc), I get about 8-12 FPS. I have 4 GB of RAM allocated to it, but it hasn't sped up much (If at all). Is there any way I can get a higher frame rate?

A. I have the same problem. But i know how to fix it(i'm on windows) You know how to get to the technic pack folder? Then tekkit>options(text object) The search for fps limit and change it to 2050. Then start up tekkit, and you should have a higher frame rate. It worked for me. If you didn't get any higher fps then you should search for antoher forum. Hope i helped :)

How can I make Minecraft work on my computer?

Will running a minecraft server on my computer slow it down?

what will happened to the drivers of my pc if i change from win7 to MAC or Linux?

How to format or wipe a compact flash that is used for an embedded operating system?
Q. I have an ATP 4GB Compact Flash that is used for a computer and not for photos or with a camera.
It is Linux OS and after I format it in Win XP, the files are still there. Is there a program such as Boot and Nuke(which is for IDE drives) that will wipe the compact flash clean??
I've also tried to fdisk/format in DOS which does not work either. Any suggestions?

A. I'd say you have a bigger problem. Formatting isn't typically conditional. You don't complete a format, only to find that there are still files a card or drive. When a new file table is applied to a media device, it should be destroying any data on the card. I would use the Windows Disk Utility to delete the partition on that card, and then apply a new format to the drive. Do not use the Quick Format option either.

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

What Ubuntu linux friendly scanner do I need?

Q. I am pondering and searching for a scanner which will be beneficial for hand drawn animation.

I need it to... :

be compatible with linux

be quick

great for scanning a lot of drawings

NOT distort or alter the quality of my drawings as I want to put the drawings into finished animation.

I am basically looking for a scanner which will work for my operating system; Ubuntu Linux, and give me the professional quality which you see with television aired 2d animation shows.

A. Well, I'm not exactly the expert on scanners, but what I've been using is an all-in-one HP Photosmart. I know the scanner is probably pretty junky, although good for my purposes, but the way it works for me is an SD card thing. Ubuntu (linux) can't directly scan like Windows does (or I haven't tried), but it recognizes the SD card by USB. So I suggest getting a scanner that has a usb card.

Anyway, the printer/copier/scanner I use is a HP Photosmart C4680, in case you are interested in it. I use HPLIP to print with Linux.

How do I install Ubuntu Linux to my PC when I have two Hard Drives and don't need to partition?
Q. I've been looking at the Ubuntu Linux site for a while, they tell you how to partition a drive, but not how to set it up for two HD's with a choice of which to boot on startup.

I know I could have the BIOS always pop up on powerup, but is there an easier way?

A. It still need to partition the drive used for Ubuntu.
Actually if you have something on the other drive like Windows, the Ubuntu will put it in the Grub boot Menu. I have XP on one drive and Ubuntu on the other on one of my computers. One word of advise, Windows doesn't play well with others, it will overwrite Grub on other drive without a second thought. So if you reinstall/install Windows unplug the Ubuntu drive during install. If your starting out from scratch install Windows first then Ubuntu, it will save the step of editing /etc/grub/menu.lst to add Windows boot item.

How can I recover deleted pictures and videos from Ubuntu/Linux if I update my computer to Windows 7?
Q. I had Ubuntu/Linux program and change from Ubuntu to Windows, but i didn't save the files, and i want to recover the videos and pictures i had in Linux, how can i recover those files if now i have Windows (i still have the same computer)??????
