Does every game on linux work on every distro?

Q. I wanted to try out Linux. I wanted to either get Fedora or Ubuntu (Mostly Fedora). So I'm a PC gamer, and I wanted to try out the Steam on Linux so my question is:
Most of the games on Steam say that they require one of the three distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint.
Some other games say they only require one (usually Ubuntu) which sort of makes me think that means thats the only one that it will work on. So if it list just one of the distro does that really mean it can't at all run on any other Distro?
By the way the Linux game I'm looking at is Serious Sam 3, which is one of those games that say they only require ubuntu.

A. It depends on how it's packaged.

A game developer that just releases a .deb with Ubuntu in mind just hung Fedora and SUSE users out to dry because they use .rpm packages. Of course if the source code is available one could always compile the game manually, but that doesn't mean that every "Linux program" works on every distribution by default, as they obviously don't.

Steam for Linux is still in Beta, so things are still up in air, as you've noticed with the varying system requirements; it often seems that Valve is really targetting the Ubuntu and Ubuntu-derivative segment because it thinks that's where the biggest user-base is, but I'm sure Fedora and the other rpm distros won't be completely ignored.

What is a good Linux 3-D games that does not require internet connection?
Q. I'm just looking for a good Linux 3-d game that is shooter or adventurous game that can be played without the internet.

A. try medal of honor allied assault

What Linux games will work with Kubuntu 9.04?
Q. It didn't come with games and i am wondering what Linux games it will play, if any at all.

A. I believe one of the packages available is called "kde-games". Look for it. I enjoy the ace of penguins suite which mirrors the OLDE Windows 3.1 games -- taipei, freecell solitaire Merlin exccept the face cards all have penguins on them. I was playing canfield when I saw your question. Also of course, you'll have to look around but there are deb packages for quake quake2 and quake3 arena (maybe even quake 4) which games were originally written on a *nix network.

Trying to remember the names of really old computer games?
Q. This is a really long shot, but I'm trying to remember the names of a couple computer games I used to play. One of them must have been around 1990, and it was this sort of maze, and you were a little truck and you pushed blocks around. Does this ring any bells for anybody? I believe it ran on a very old version of Windows.

The second game is a Linux game. You were this little guy and you had to climb up and down ladders, trying to get all the diamonds, which were points. You had a bunch of other little guys who were chasing you -- it was sort of like Pac-man. I remember at the end, you climbed up a tall ladder to the top of the screen to advance to the next level..

I played these so long ago that that's all I can remember about them, but I've been straining for weeks trying to remember their names. Anybody have any idea?

A. Nope. But don't worry about it. One day when your doing something, it'll randomly come into your head. Works every time.

Q. My Linux box doesn't have a connection to the internet and my Windows system does. I planned to download a Linux program from my Windows system to use on my Linux box.

A. Harry is right. Save it onto a floppy with vfat or a CD with a Joliet file system and you will have no problems. I had to deal with a corrupted Quake 1 disk the other day and I was told that it was looking for Joliet. Windows closes files with a control-z while *nix uses control-d but you will find that the OS does that conversion for you and you shouldn't have to worry about it unless the Linux install is badly botched on the target system.

Q. My Linux box doesn't have a connection to the internet and my Windows system does. I planned to download a Linux program from my Windows system to use on my Linux box.

A. Harry is right. Save it onto a floppy with vfat or a CD with a Joliet file system and you will have no problems. How do i turn an ISO into a disk that will boot on CPU start up/ Should I use linux????
Q. Ok i have two questions so far, This will help end the struggle you guys and girls have been helping me with thus far. I got an ISO of WIN XP Home. I have 2 cd keys from old CPU's. I know itll work cuz i just tryed it on my wifes. My first question is how the hell to i make this ISO into a actual DVD? So that when i restart i can choose to boot from the ISO (dvd) and reinstall WIN XP.

Now for Linux, Two games that consume my life are BattleFeild And Fable. I need a Music program and I use wireless internet. I have been told that Linux is free. Its just a Pain to install. However, Vista was a pain to install and its a pain to use. So i guess my question is Will i be able to run these games on a linux system? If so which one? And how many people actually (not just saying it without experiance) recomend Linux system?

A. Ok, I can answer your first question, but not the second. First, you need an ISO handling program (personally I prefer PowerISO, although there are others) that is capable of burning CD's/DVD's. Then, it is simply a matter of going into that programs tools menu, and clicking on "Burn image to CD/DVD" or something like that. All you have to do then is to find the ISO file and select it. You then need to insert it inot your PRIMARY CD/DVD drive, and make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from CD before the hard drive.

Hope that helps.

Is there an alternative to Windows for a gaming PC?
Q. Can Linux play games OK? I'm anti-windows/mac and want to learn more.

A. Linux can play *some* games, using a program called WINE, and another called Cedega.

The compatibility lists are here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/
http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/

Some games (One's that use OpenGL and Direct3D rendering methods as opposed to DirectX, such as Unreal Tournament and Quake 3) are linux ready straight out of the box.

Q. Hi I'm thinking about switching to a mac and installing linux. It seems like the perfect setup to get the most out of what you pay for. But I'm not sure if my linux games would be compatible with the mac and if would there be any emulation?

A. i dont think that it can like automatically work unless you use some plug-ins

Is it possible to convert Linux games for Windows?
Q. I have a couple of simple games (not 3d) on Linux OS and I need to run them on Windows XP on the other computer. So would it be possible to make them run on Win OS?

A. Usually most Linux games have been ported to Windows. You can always install Ubuntu as a WuBi install on Windows so you can run any non-ported games on Windows (technically they would be running on Ubuntu but I won't sweat the details).

Is it possible to download Linux games on a Windows system to play on a different, Linux system, later?
