How can I make Minecraft work on my computer?

Q. I'm able to run Minecraft and login but after it loads it just force quits and gives me hs_err_pid3992 file. It doesn't even reach the Mojang logo.

A. Try downloading the Linux version of Minecraft. On the Minecraft website go to download now and click show all platforms then under Minecraft for Linux/ Others click Minecraft.jar.

I got ophcrack for windows and i am having problems?
Q. and i burnt it to a disk with no problems, i can get to the menue where i select the mode, but after that i get a black screen with words saying that the adress is already in use, bind failed, etc. Then it just shuts down and i get a very pixelated screen, much like you would see on a broken television except there is a brighter square that is attached to my mouse like a cursor

A. Something wrong here... Ophcrack does not need a IP or network address if running the Windows version. The boot CD version may try to get an IP, but again, it is not required for running any cracking attempts.
A boot CD version is NOT a "Windows" version, two different things. Windows version runs as an application under Windows. A boot CD is made for various versions of Windows, and run under a Linux OS. Each CD (ISO) is different. Make sure you have downloaded the proper CD version if that is what you are doing....

Can Watch Star Trek Into Darkness Online Movie on Linux ?

How can I stop linux/ubuntu from being downloaded on my personal laptop?

Where to Download UNIX and What Version or Kind?
Q. I've tried to google some sites where to download UNIX and just can't seem to find one. Also some Yahoo answers keep showing LINUX download website links not UNIX. And if I found one there were lots of choices. I'm just starting to learn how to program so please help ^^ thanks in advance

A. Linux just the name of a free Unix. There's no one "true" Unix. There are HPUX (Hewlett Packard Unix), AIX (IBM's Unix), MacIntosh is Unix, all of the Linuxes, all of the BSD's, Solaris (Sun Microsystems's Unix), and more. Here is a Unix "Family Tree":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Unix_history-simple.svg

Your free choices are:

1. Any of the various Linux flavors. For beginners, or for experts wanting a nice desktop or programming platform, I recommend Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com ). After you install it, be sure to do this at the command line:

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

For servers, I recommend CentOS ( http://www.centos.org/ ).

2. Solaris is free: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp

3. Any of the BSD's. FreeBSD is the most popular. There's also NetBSD, but I recommend OpenBSD ( http://www.openbsd.org ) because it has the best track record of any operating system for security (only two remote exploits in over ten years).

For servers, I recommend OpenBSD over CentOS or Linux for security reasons; however, OpenBSD isn't supported by VMware; so if you're running your server in VMware, then CentOS is the way to go. If you want the best possible file system performance for a database, then Solaris is the way to go (be sure to read up on ZFS first).

Back to the point of your question: For your purposes, I recommend Ubuntu. Don't forget the following command lines (the first installs compilers and C libraries, the second installs the Adobe Flash player, Java, and some other goodies):

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

For your IDE, if you're not into Eclipse, then try Bluefish (sudo apt-get install bluefish).

How to boot from a ISO disk to my laptop?

Q. Okay so i got Linux, Downloaded a new Operating system from Vuze, burned onto a disk, it's an ISO file, How can i boot that disk from my laptop?

A. When you open the disk you should see the file system of the .iso, and the a .iso file. If you see the later, you burnt it wrong.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

The other issue is you may have to access the BIOS (about 50% of the time)

Where do I find Linux webcam drivers to download?
Q. I have a Linux eeePC netbook and want to install a Philips SPC210 webcam where do I find a Linux driver download? OR I have a Microsoft X1000 webcam and a Logitech Quickcam. All I need is a Linux driver download for one of these?

Please help :-)

Thanks

A. http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/

I just googled for "Logitech Quickcam Linux" and this was the first hit. Have fun with the installation manual :p

Which is the most popular Linux to download?
Q. I want to download linux to my pc. Which is the best and most popular version to use?

A. To begin with I recommend looking at a LiveCD.

There are two worth taking an immediate look at being Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04

Linux is now in a position of offering a viable alternative to proprietary platforms and more than capable of offering a full desktop experience.

Install or RUN IT LIVE !

Ubuntu 9.04 Download

Ubuntu 8.10 installation tutorial (also applies to Ubuntu 9.04)

You download the ISO. image of either Linux Mint 6 or Ubuntu 9.04 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

Why is my bandwidth limited so much in windows?
Q. I have been switching between linux and windows for a while now while I learn a little bit more about linux to where I can make a perminant switch.

When using Linux my download speeds would get up to the 900KBPS speed they are supposed to but in windows it is limited to a very sad 100KBPS for no good reason.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

This is with a fresh windows install (about an hour ago) so its not bugged.

A. Are you using a download manager of some sort?

I'm not sure how Linux works but some download managers (IDM) are really good. They are able to download the file in parts which means that you're downloading at probably 5 or 6 times the normal speed.

Downloading through a browser just downloads the file as a whole and this takes a lot longer.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?
Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

A. Don't loan your laptop to someone if you can't trust them to not download stuff you don't want on there.

What is the difference in the Linux downloads for Python and which should I get?

Q. I am currently running Ubuntu 10.10(Maverick Meerkat) and do not know which Python download is appropriate. Please help.

A. Ubuntu 10.10 uses python 2.6.6

Linux Mint 6 Release notes
http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia.php
Ubuntu 9.04 Release notes
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JauntyJackalope/TechnicalOverview

Linux Mint 6 Download
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=31
Ubuntu 9.04 Download
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/

If you like either of them

Linux Mint 6 installation tutorial

Ubuntu 8.10 installation tutorial (also applies to Ubuntu 9.04)
http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8.10

You download the ISO. image of either Linux Mint 6 or Ubuntu 9.04 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

Remember you can RUN IT LIVE !

Which Linux Can play videos and Music by default?
Q. Please, I cant install any additional softwares. Non of the linux(s) I downloaded were able to play videos or music. CAN ANYONE PLEASE RECOMMEND ONE WHICH CAN PLAY VIDEOS (XVID , DVD..) JUST BY INSTALLING THE OS.
ALSO WHICH IS THE MOST GLAMOROUS/STYLISH LINUX YOU SAY?
I dont have internet connection, Mint is not responding to my keyboard or mouse.

A. Take a look at Ultimate Edition. It comes with a lot of extra software installed by default including multimedia codecs for videos etc. It requires a dvd for installation because of the extra files. The download is 3.0 GB which is about 5 times bigger than the standard linux download.
Have fun
